WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and 13 others injured after a car plowed into a birthday party crowd on Saturday evening in Maryland, police said Sunday.
A man drove a car into a crowd of people attending a child's birthday party in front of a house in Bladensburg, a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, injuring 14 people, according to police and media reports.
A 31-year-old woman died of her injuries in the hospital. And the 13 others injured were five adults and eight children aged 1-17, with at least three adults and one child being hospitalized.
The driver, identified as a 66-year-old male from Washington, D.C., fled the scene on foot but later turned himself in, the Bladensburg Police Department said. After being interviewed by crash investigators, he now faces pending criminal charges, according to a police statement posted on Facebook.
Videos and photos posted on social media show a car crashing into a big white tent believed to have been used for the birthday party, which was torn open and partially collapsed. ■
