KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Farmers in Malaysia's northern state of Perlis have incurred some 42.6 million ringgit (10.3 million U.S. dollars) in losses due to recent floods, with the majority of the damage involving paddy crops, according to a state government official.
Razali Saad, chairman of the State Committee for Agriculture, Plantations and Consumer Affairs, told a press briefing on Thursday that over 14,785 hectares of paddy crops had been affected, along with mangoes, vegetables, plantation and industrial crops, mushrooms, and agro-based industries.
Razali added that losses to the agro-tourism sector in the state are still being assessed.
Perlis and the neighboring Kedah state are key agricultural states, particularly in the cultivation of rice.
Flooding has affected parts of Malaysia in recent weeks, with tens of thousands displaced in several states, while at least two deaths have been reported. ■
