MEXICO CITY, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Gabriel Fernandez converted a late penalty as Cruz Azul salvaged a 1-1 home draw with Tigres UANL in the first leg of their Liga MX Apertura semifinal on Wednesday.
Former Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa opened the scoring just after the hour, sweeping home a first-time effort following Romulo Zwarg's deflected cross.
The hosts equalized through Fernandez's 76th-minute spot kick after Marco Farfan was penalized for handball.
In Wednesday's other semifinal opening leg, a first-half goal from German Berterame fired Monterrey to a 1-0 home victory over Toluca.
Berterame put his side ahead with a 39th-minute header following Jesus Corona's cross.
The return fixtures will be played on Saturday with the winners on aggregate advancing to the final, to be contested over two legs on December 11 and 14. ■
