TEGUCIGALPA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Honduras on Sunday launched nationwide general elections to choose a new president and members of Congress.
In officially declaring the opening of the general elections nationwide, the country's electoral commission called on actors to "avoid fueling any spark of confrontation or violence in the country."
Voters will also cast ballots for hundreds of mayors and other political positions.
Pre-election polls indicate a highly competitive race among three of the five presidential candidates: Rixi Moncada of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre), Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party of Honduras, and Nasry Asfura of the National Party.
Dozens of domestic and international observation missions are monitoring the process, including delegations from the Organization of American States and the European Union. ■
